Aleksandar Djurić
“The essence of the pictorial should be reclaimed to the richness of the visual; thus, art will be restored to the world.”
Aleksandar Djurić
Aleksandar M. Djurić, born in 1953 in Belgrade, is a distinguished Serbian visual artist, celebrated for his multifaceted approach, that blends artistic practice, theory, and critical reflection. Graduating in Yugoslav and Comparative Literature from the Faculty of Philology (1978) and completing postgraduate studies in Art History at the Faculty of Philosophy (1981), Djurić has charted a distinctive artistic trajectory at the intersection of intellectual inquiry and creative expression.
Djurić’s work spans painting, collage, sculpture, installation, and text. Moving fluidly across media, he explores complex themes through a visual language marked by contemplation and subtle humor. His exhibitions, such as Simultano oko (Simultaneous Eye) and Svetovi slike (Worlds of Images), reflect his commitment to pushing the boundaries of visual representation, while his monumental public work, the 19-meter sculpture Jedro (The Sail) in Budva, Montenegro, demonstrates his engagement with large-scale artistic interventions.
A central idea in Djurić’s theoretical reflections is the concept of the “integral image,” which he defines as the union of “viewing” and “seeing.” He distinguishes between surface-level perception and a deeper, receptive understanding, advocating for art that fuses both to create a dynamic, immersive experience. In his treatise Simultano oko, the integral image emerges as a structure of mental depth, transcending the flatness of two-dimensional space and opening into a new spatial form.
Just as his images are constructed through layered form and reflection, Đurić’s writing – ranging from theoretical essays and poetry to children’s literature, serves as an extension of his visual thinking, where language becomes an instrument of articulation and inquiry. In both mediums, clarity and conceptual structure are not ends in themselves, but means to explore how perception becomes meaning and moves into the realm of lived and embodied experience.
His works are held in prominent public and private collections. Through his long-standing affiliations with ULUS, AICA, LADA (as honorary lifetime president), and the Inamori Foundation in Kyoto, he maintains an active presence in both national and international artistic dialogues.
