“The essence of the pictorial should be reclaimed to the richness of the visual; thus, art will be restored to the world.”
Aleksandar Djurić
Aleksandar M. Djurić, born in 1953 in Belgrade, is a distinguished Serbian visual artist celebrated for his multifaceted approach, blending artistic practice, theory, and critical reflection. He graduated in Yugoslav and Comparative Literature from the Faculty of Philology (1978) and completed postgraduate studies in Art History at the Faculty of Philosophy (1981), cultivating a unique artistic trajectory that bridges intellectual inquiry and creative expression.
Djurić’s work spans painting, collage, sculpture, and installation, exploring complex themes through distinctive visual languages. His art combines a contemplative approach with subtle humor, inviting viewers to engage in deeper reflection. Exhibitions such as Simultano oko (The Simultaneous Eye) and Svetovi slike (Worlds of Images) reflect his commitment to pushing the boundaries of visual representation, while his monumental public work, the 19-meter sculpture Jedro (The Sail) in Budva, Montenegro, exemplifies his engagement with large-scale art.
Central to Djurić’s theoretical reflections is the concept of the integral image, which he defines as the union of “viewing” and “seeing.” By distinguishing surface-level perception from a deeper, receptive understanding, he advocates for art that unites these processes to create a dynamic and immersive experience. His theoretical work, particularly in the tract The Simultaneous Eye, positions the integral image as a structure of depth and mental space, transcending traditional two-dimensionality to establish a new spatial form.
Djurić’s works are included in significant private and public collections, such as the National Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade.
